Management of Seasons
Management of Seasons
Most bitches experience a season every 6-9 months and often this pattern is sustained so breeders can predict quite reliably when their bitch’s next season is due.
Some bitches’ seasons, however, are less predictable, which can be an issue when planning distant matings around work and family commitments, show schedules, game seasons etc. Such irregularity can be normal, or, it can be an indicator of a reproductive problem which may require further investigation. Whether your bitch’s seasons are regular or irregular, there are a wide range of options available to postpone them – either briefly or for a prolonged period – without having any lasting effects on future fertility.
Vet-Repro Specialist Reproductive Practice
The consensus among most reproductive specialists is that the traditional progestin treatments (which mimic progesterone), should not be used for postponement of seasons given the significant risk of pyometra. Fortunately, we have useful alternatives.

Every bitch is different so during your appointment at Vet Repro, your bitch will be examined and her reproductive history will be discussed – the more detail you can provide the better. Then a plan can be tailored to meet your bitch’s specific requirements.

Do you need advice, or would you like to discuss if the procedures we offer are right for you and your pet? We’re friendly and would be happy to help.
