The only true marker of fertility is pregnancy, however, there are a range of characteristics we consider optimal for sperm and these are worth looking for when evaluating your dog’s fertility.
At Vet Repro, we have an advanced laboratory, which allows us to assess semen samples for various markers fertility, prior to processing for shipping or freezing, as part of a breeding soundness evaluation or for infertility investigation.

Common fertility markers include sperm concentration, total and progressive motility and sperm morphology.

We use a combination of stains as well as an advanced microscopy technique called phase contrast.

If warranted, we can also look at the chemical composition of the seminal fluid itself, which can often provide further clues for causes of infertility.
